What do I wear?
The main thing is to feel comfortable, but for best results (better grip), bare arms and legs are recommended, so shorts and a top or similar. If you don't fancy shorts, trackie bottoms you can roll above your knee are better than jeans. Footwear - shoes/heels or trainers; for safety reasons no bare feet please.
What not to wear!
Rings, bracelets, anklets - these will scratch the poles and generally be uncomfortable for you, bare feet and IMPORTANTLY - no body lotions, oils, moisturisers etc, these make the poles very slippery and possibly dangerous.
Do I need to bring anything else?
You might want to bring some water or juice.
How strenuous is pole dancing?
The first time you try it, pole dancing will feel fairly strenuous, and you will probably feel it in your upper body muscles the next day. This would be the same with any new physical activity where your body needs time to adapt to the new demands being placed on it. Once you begin to get used to the pole, the techniques that allow for a better spin will come more into play, and this, combined with a gradual increase in strength, will bring progress. Regular pole dancing is great for bringing tone to all areas of the body.
How big is the class?
8 people maximum.
How many people per pole?
There are 4 poles so that means 2 people maximum. From experience, 1 pole per person for an hour is too tiring. Sharing a pole allows students as well as practice, to watch each other and correct moves, posture etc in some cases, this helps the moves sink in more quickly.
Am I too old / wrong shape / unfit?
No! There is no upper age limit in the classes and all are welcome. I'm happy to say there's been a real cross-section of ages, backgrounds, shapes and sizes in the classes, which we are very keen to encourage as pole dancing really should be for all women. People all progress at their own pace, and it really doesn't matter if you're super-fit, true pole dancing isn't just throwing yourself around the pole like a gymnast, it's more about playing to your strengths whichever area they may lay in - the static poses ... transitions ... accent moves ... posture and form ... self-expression, all are important aspects of this dance discipline. It may be harder work than it looks, but happily given practice it's also an achieveable skill for everyone. The atmosphere in the classes is usually friendly and supportive, rather than competitive.
Can I attend if I am 16/17?
Sorry but for insurance reasons, class participants must be 18+.
I have a sports injury / heart problems / other health concerns
You're still welcome to attend, but as with beginning any new strenuous exercise regime, please check with your GP first if you have any concerns. You'll be required to sign a waiver / disclaimer in the first lesson.
Can I pole dance if I'm pregnant / recently given birth?
Pole dancing isn't recommended for anyone who is pregnant or recently given birth due to increased possibility of injury at this time.
I'm a bloke, can I join a class?
The regular scheduled classes are non-mixed and for ladies only, however men are more than welcome if they're part of a one-off group booking, or if there were sufficient numbers to run a class just for the guys.
What happens if I miss a class?
You're welcome to attend one of the other classes that week or a pole practice session, if there is space. Unfortunately refunds cannot be made for individual weeks missed, and classes are not transferable to later courses. There will in any case probably be a re-cap of the moves in either the following lesson, or towards the end of the course, so it's unlikely you'll miss out completely.
Do I have to strip and are there spectators?
No! Though pole dancing is a sensual dance form there is no stripping involved. Pole dancing is an impressive and spectacular enough skill in itself without the need to get one's clothes off.
Spectators are strictly not allowed and the classes are held in spaces which are closed to the public.
